After the sudden death of his mother, orphaned teen Louis is left in the care of his ailing grandparents hundreds of miles away in New Mexico. But, before he can board a bus to join his grandparents, a financially desperate small time crook, John, kidnaps Louis and takes him on an open-road adventure. In order to fund his ill-planned scheme and deliver Louis to his grandparents, John makes Louis an unlikely partner in a series of armed robberies across Texas and New Mexico. These complete strangers quickly become outlaws and reluctant friends. Along the way, they meet Mary and Rose – a mother and daughter looking for a ride and a little bit of romance. However, when John and Mary’s fleeting relationship sours and an ill-planned robbery goes horribly awry, John must decide if life on the run is a life worth living.
